I was interested in Legacy of Ashes, too, in which case you might want to try Ghost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan, and Bin Laden, from the Soviet Invasion to September 10, 2001. Haven't read it, but a CC teacher recommended it. There's also the slightly less legitimate Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, but you can wade past the BS and still get something out of it.
